The wormjawed mormyrid (Campylomormyrus tamandua) is one of the more unusual freshwater fish you might stumble across, occasionally turning up as an accidental import mixed in with shipments of the much more familiar elephant fish. Where the elephant fish has only a lower jaw extension, this species has both jaws elongated into a beak-like rostrum. A useful tool for rooting out invertebrates and small prey from crevices and substrate. Native to several major river systems across central and western Africa, including the Congo and Niger basins, it inhabits soft, acidic waters and demands those conditions in captivity. Beyond its looks, what really sets mormyrids apart is their electric sense. Like its relatives, this fish generates a weak electric field from modified muscle tissue near the tail and uses specialized receptors to detect distortions in that field, allowing it to navigate, hunt, and even communicate with other fish in complete darkness. Mormyrids as a group are also notable for having proportionally large brains, and this species is no exception. In the aquarium, keep it as a solitary specimen. It does not tolerate other mormyrids, including its own kind, and the electric signaling can trigger real aggression. Larger Synodontis catfish and calm cichlids tend to work as tankmates. This is not a beginner's fish: it has specific water quality requirements, is sensitive to many medications, and can be fussy about accepting prepared foods.
