Elegance Coral (Catalaphyllia jardinei) is one of those large polyp stony corals that genuinely earns its reputation as a centerpiece animal. In the wild it inhabits sheltered, often turbid lagoon and coastal environments. Low light, low flow areas that many reefers wouldn't immediately think of as prime coral habitat. That natural history is important context for keeping it well. The coral's skeleton forms broad, evenly spaced V-shaped valleys with sharp walls and widely separated septa, but the skeletal structure is mostly hidden beneath the animal's substantial soft tissue. What you actually see are large, fleshy oral discs ringed with tubular tentacles, typically in a rich green with contrasting pink tentacle tips and a distinctively striped mouth area. A color combination that's genuinely hard to forget once you've seen it. One thing to be clear about upfront: this species is an aggressive stinger and will go after neighbors given the chance, so placement with generous buffer space around it is not optional. It can also develop satellite colonies in aquarium conditions over time, which is an interesting behavior to watch but worth planning for in your layout. Intermediate-level care is a fair assessment. It's not a beginner coral, but it rewards hobbyists who pay attention to placement and flow.
