Bolivia Cichlid

A rarely encountered South American species, Cichlasoma boliviense goes by the informal name Bolivia cichlid and is sometimes mistakenly written as C. boliviensis in older references. Native to the Madre de Dios drainage in Peru and the Mamoré and Guaporé river basins of Bolivia, this fish naturally occupies shallow, muddy shoreline zones and turbid pools with clay-heavy substrates. Conditions that hint at its fairly tolerant nature in captivity. Reaching somewhere between two and a half to just over four inches as an adult, it stays compact enough for a reasonably sized tank, and its care demands are considered accessible even for newer cichlid keepers. That said, it carries the temperament typical of the group. Not as combative as many Central American cichlids, but assertive enough that tankmates need to be chosen carefully. Robust characins, catfish, and other medium to large cichlids tend to hold their own best alongside it. Spreading fish across a well-decorated tank with plenty of territorial anchors helps dilute any aggression. A bonded pair in a species setup is another solid option. Breeding details from home aquariums are sparse, though the behavior is assumed to follow patterns seen in closely related cichlids. It remains an uncommon find in the hobby, which is a shame given how manageable it is overall.
