Clove Polyps

Found in the coastal waters of Tanzania, Clavularia margaritiferae is a stoloniferan soft coral. Part of the group hobbyists often call clove polyps or encrusting star polyps. Like its relatives, it grows as a creeping mat of individual polyps connected by a thin tissue layer, slowly spreading across rock surfaces and substrate over time. Each polyp extends feathery pinnate tentacles when open, giving the colony a fuzzy, soft texture that sways gently in the current. This species is collected from the Tanzanian Exclusive Economic Zone, making it a somewhat less commonly encountered member of the Clavularia group compared to Indo-Pacific varieties, though it shares much the same care profile. It does well under low light and low flow, which actually puts it within reach of newer reef keepers who may not yet have a high-output lighting system dialed in. It is reef safe and generally gets along well in a mixed soft coral setup, though like most encrusting corals it can compete for space if given room to spread unchecked. For someone looking to get started with soft corals on a modest budget and setup, this is a forgiving and rewarding choice.
