Found within the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone, Clavularia thompsoni is a soft coral belonging to the encrusting clove polyp group, closely related to the colonial mat-forming corals familiar to many reef keepers. Like its relatives, it spreads as a mat of individual polyps, each one extending feathery pinnate tentacles to feed on passing particulates in the water column. Its New Zealand origin sets it apart from the tropical Indo-Pacific species more commonly encountered in the hobby, suggesting an adaptation to cooler, calmer waters rather than the brightly lit, high-flow environments typical of tropical reef systems. In the aquarium, this coral does best with subdued lighting and gentle water movement, making it a reasonable choice for reef tanks that lean toward softer, lower-energy conditions. Because its care demands are on the forgiving end of the spectrum, it is considered accessible even for newer reef hobbyists who are still getting comfortable with coral husbandry. As with most encrusting soft corals, it appreciates a stable environment and will gradually spread across available hard substrate when conditions suit it. Stock information and hobbyist experience with this specific species remains relatively limited, so connecting with other keepers who have worked with New Zealand soft corals is worthwhile.
