Distorted Mushroom Coral
Cycloseris distorta
Also known as: Wedge Coral
A free-living mushroom coral that roams the seafloor solo.

About
Distorted Mushroom Coral (Cycloseris distorta) is a solitary, free-living stony coral found across a wide swath of the Indo-Pacific, from shallow reef flats down to surprisingly deep water. Unlike the colonial hard corals that cement themselves permanently to rock, this species exists as a single, unattached polyp that sits loose on sandy or rubble-strewn substrates on the reef. The common names hint at its shape. The corallite has an irregular, somewhat wedge-like or warped form that distinguishes it from more symmetrical disc corals. In the wild it turns up across a broad tropical range, and that depth tolerance suggests it can handle a fair range of light conditions. In a reef aquarium it fits in well toward the lower or mid sections of the tank where light is moderate and flow stays gentle, which suits its natural preference for calmer, open-bottom zones. Because it needs to sit on a flat surface rather than be mounted on rock, placement takes a little thought, but overall this is a manageable coral for someone relatively new to keeping stony corals. It will not compete aggressively for space the way many encrusting species do, and its unusual free-living lifestyle makes it a genuinely interesting conversation piece in any mixed reef setup.
