Found in shaded, slow-moving blackwater streams and swamp-forest habitats across the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and Singapore, this small cyprinid, Desmopuntius hexazona, is better known in the trade under its lookalike cousin's name. The pentazona barb. The two species are nearly identical, but hexazona lacks the small dark spot at the rear base of the dorsal fin that distinguishes D. pentazona. It also has a much broader natural range. In older literature it sometimes appears as Puntius johorensis, a name that actually belongs to a different, larger species. In the aquarium, hexazona is a peaceful, mid-water schooler that does best alongside similarly sized Southeast Asian companions. Small loaches, other gentle cyprinids, and certain anabantoids all make good choices. Boisterous or fast-moving tankmates are worth avoiding since they tend to outcompete this modest little fish at feeding time. Groups of eight or more are really the minimum worth considering: a larger school keeps individuals calmer, produces a much more natural display, and prompts males to show their best coloration as they posture and compete for females. Spawning is achievable at home and follows the typical egg-scattering pattern of small cyprinids, though separating adults from eggs promptly is essential. This is an intermediate-level fish that rewards a thoughtful setup.
