The Redtail Barb (Discherodontus ashmeadi) is one of those species that most hobbyists have never encountered, and for good reason. It comes from localized populations in the Mekong and Maeklong river basins of Southeast Asia, rarely turns up in the trade, and has a reputation for being notoriously difficult to transport. In the wild it favors clear, fast-moving streams and rivers with gravel or stony substrates, spending time near the bottom in pools where decaying plant debris accumulates, and reportedly foraging at night. Villagers in parts of Laos consistently found it active only after dark, which hints at nocturnal tendencies worth keeping in mind in the aquarium. Visually, it's distinguished from close relatives by the red to pink coloration in the dorsal and caudal fins, versus the orange tones of Discherodontus halei, and by a dark blotch on the dorsal fin that persists into adulthood rather than fading over time. It's a peaceful schooling species and does best in groups of at least six, where males will compete with each other and display their best color. Tank companions should be non-aggressive species comfortable in well-oxygenated, moderately flowing water. One critical handling note: this fish loses scales easily when lifted from the water and those bare patches are prone to infection, so always transfer it submerged. It's one for the patient, experienced keeper.
