Flat Lettuce Coral (Echinomorpha nishihirai) is a relatively obscure species from the Western Pacific, where it grows on sheltered lower reef slopes and tucked into crevices away from strong wave action. In the wild it lives at modest depths, in the kind of low-energy zones that translate well to aquarium conditions. Making it a workable choice for reef keepers who can offer gentle flow and moderate lighting. The colony structure is thin and somewhat fragile, which gives the coral a light, airy look rather than the heavy, boulder-like form of many other hard corals. Some individuals consist of a single corallite, while others develop a dominant central corallite surrounded by smaller, widely spaced ones arranged outward like wheel spokes. A detail that becomes quite visible on closer inspection. Coloration tends toward dark browns and greens, either as a solid tone or in mottled patches, so it won't stand out as a bold centerpiece, but it adds a quiet, natural texture to a mixed reef display. Because this genus is monotypic and not commonly traded, hobbyist experience with it is limited, though its low-flow, moderate-light requirements suggest it should not be particularly demanding once settled into a stable system.
