Flat Lettuce Coral (Echinophyllia echinoporoides) is a broad, sheet-like encrusting coral found across the Western Central Pacific, ranging from near the surface down to about 30 meters. In the wild it gravitates toward protected, steeply sloping reef walls and turbid conditions that would stress more delicate species, which tells you something useful about its character in captivity. The colony grows as a flat or slightly layered crust, occasionally developing small nodular bumps toward the center. Its individual corallites are on the small side, mostly sunken into the skeleton and angled gently outward toward the colony edges. Coloration tends toward cream through dark brownish-green, though populations around Japan frequently turn a warm brick red, which can make the same species look quite different depending on its source. This coral does well under moderate lighting and prefers gentle water movement rather than strong direct flow, making placement on a lower or shaded section of the rockwork a natural fit. Its tolerance for lower light and murky conditions in the wild translates into a forgiving disposition in the home reef tank, and it is generally considered accessible for newer reef keepers who want a textured, encrusting LPS without a steep learning curve.
