Porous Lettuce Coral (Echinophyllia glabra) is a plating and encrusting coral native to the Western Central Pacific, where it grows across a wide range of reef environments from shallow water down to around 25 meters. Its natural distribution stretches across a broad tropical band, suggesting it is a resilient and adaptable species in the wild. In the aquarium, that adaptability carries over nicely. This is generally considered a beginner-friendly coral that doesn't demand the kind of intense light or flow that challenges newer reefers. It prefers calmer water movement, which makes placement toward the lower or more sheltered areas of a reef tank a natural fit. The surface texture is the real draw here: irregular, porous, and layered in a way that catches the eye without relying on bright coloration alone. Like other members of its genus, it tends to grow in overlapping plates or broad encrusting sheets, and that growth form can add real structural interest to a reef display over time. It is fully reef safe, posing no threat to neighboring corals through aggressive sweeper tentacles or fast encroachment under typical aquarium conditions.
