Flat Lettuce Coral (Echinophyllia patula) is a plating coral from the Western Central Pacific, where it grows as thin, flat sheets across vertical reef surfaces in clear, deeper water. In the wild it tends to settle on shaded faces and walls rather than the bright shallows, which translates well to aquarium keeping. Moderate light and low flow suit it comfortably, making it a workable choice for hobbyists who are still dialing in their reef setup. The colony structure is distinctive up close: corallites are spread widely and somewhat irregularly across the surface, partially embedded in the skeleton, with broad central pillars and well-developed ridges that carry sharp triangular teeth. Deep pits mark where those ridges originate, giving the surface a textured, almost sculpted look. Coloration tends toward the understated side. Greys, grey-greens, and browns are typical rather than the vivid pigments seen in some other Echinophyllia species. What it lacks in flashiness it makes up for in form; the broad, rippling plate shape has a quiet architectural quality that works well as a mid-tank or lower-tank focal piece. Give it stable water quality, keep flow gentle so the tissue isn't buffeted, and it should settle in without much fuss.
