Hedgehog Coral (Echinopora fruticulosa) is a branching species from the Eastern Indian Ocean, where it colonizes shallow reef environments across a wide range of conditions. In the wild it can grow into impressive dome-shaped masses of interlocking branches stretching well over a meter across, though aquarium specimens obviously stay far more modest in scale. The growth form is genuinely distinctive: individual branches are built around single tubular corallites with lateral buds sprouting off them, giving the colony a spiky, almost architectural texture. Corallites run roughly 5 to 8 millimeters across, and the widely spaced costal spines give the surface that hedgehog quality the common name hints at. Coloration is a warm pinkish-brown overall, with the tips of the corallites noticeably paler, which creates a subtle two-tone contrast across the colony. Unlike some stony corals, this species shows little tendency to flatten into plates or develop a solid base, so it keeps that open, branchy silhouette throughout its life. Care sits comfortably at an intermediate level. Not a beginner coral, but not especially demanding either. It appreciates moderate light and moderate water movement, and given stable water quality it tends to be a reasonably steady grower that rewards consistent husbandry.
