Found on shallow sandstone rock formations across a relatively narrow range in the Western Pacific, Euphyllia paraglabrescens is a large-polyp stony coral with short, rounded tentacles that puff out like small bubbles. Unlike many corals that retract during daylight hours, this species keeps its tentacles extended continuously, giving it a consistently full and active appearance in the aquarium. Its coloration is understated, typically grey or green, so it won't be the loudest piece in a mixed reef, but that soft, rounded texture has its own quiet appeal. It's closely related to Euphyllia glabrescens, and the two are almost impossible to tell apart by skeletal structure alone. Wild populations have been documented from Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia, generally in shallow subtropical waters. In the aquarium, moderate lighting and moderate flow suit it well. It's not the most forgiving coral for a brand-new reef keeper, since large-polyp stonies do best once a tank is stable and parameters are consistent, but it's a reasonable goal for someone who has moved past the beginner stage and wants to add some textural variety to their system.
