Flower coral (Eusmilia fastigiata) is one of those corals that rewards patient, observant keepers. Its real personality only comes out after the lights go down. By day the colony presents a dome-shaped or branching cluster of widely spaced tubular corallites in muted yellow-brown to grey tones, which can look almost understated on the reef. Come nightfall, however, the polyps extend two distinct sizes of tentacles, with the larger ones fanning out from broad bases in a way that gives the coral its common name. Structurally, the skeletal septa run in two alternating orders and are well-developed, giving the corallites a neat, symmetrical appearance when you look closely. In the wild, this species favors calmer, protected reef zones rather than wave-battered slopes, and that preference translates directly to aquarium care. It appreciates moderate water movement without harsh, direct flow. Lighting requirements sit in the middle range, making it compatible with a variety of reef setups. It is considered reef safe and poses no particular threat to neighbors, though like most LPS corals it benefits from some space around it. Intermediate-level experience is recommended, as stable water quality and consistent conditions will keep it looking its best.
