Gnarly brain coral (Favites abdita) is a hefty, mounding stony coral found across a vast stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East African coast out to the central Pacific. In the wild it grows into rounded or lumpy colonies that can eventually exceed a meter across, making it one of the more substantial reef-builders in its range. Each corallite is rounded with thick, solid walls, and the septa carry small, prominent teeth that give the surface that characteristically rough, textured look. The 'gnarly' part of its common name makes a lot of sense once you see it up close. Coloration tends toward pale brown in clear water, sometimes with green oral discs, but specimens from murkier environments often run noticeably darker. It's found across most reef habitat types, from shallow water down to around 47 meters, which speaks to how adaptable this coral is in nature. In the aquarium it asks for moderate light and moderate flow, and it appreciates enough room to eventually develop some size. It's considered intermediate rather than beginner-friendly, mainly because consistent water quality and stable parameters matter more with larger LPS corals. Give it steady conditions and it proves to be a durable, long-lived centerpiece for a mixed reef.
