Larger Star Coral (Favites complanata) is a solid, mounding species that quietly holds its own on a reef without demanding much attention. Colonies grow in a massive form, built from slightly angular corallites with thick, well-rounded walls. One of the more distinctive structural details is what happens at the points where three corallites meet. The connecting costae often form a small three-pointed star, a neat geometric pattern you can spot once you know to look for it. The columellae are notably large, and septal spines can be prominent depending on the individual colony. Paliform lobes are present but only weakly developed, giving the surface a relatively clean look. Coloration tends toward brown, though some colonies show green or grey oral discs, which can make them a bit more visually interesting under reef lighting. In the wild, this species turns up across a broad range of reef environments, suggesting it tolerates varying conditions reasonably well. In the aquarium, it fits comfortably into an intermediate keeper's setup with moderate light and moderate flow. It is reef safe and not known for aggressive sweeper behavior beyond the typical coral-to-coral caution. A dependable, understated addition to a mixed reef.
