Larger Star Coral (Favites halicora) is a sturdy, slow-growing stony coral that forms dense, rounded or slightly mounded colonies across shallow reef environments. Its corallites are notable for their unusually thick walls, which give the colony a robust, almost fortress-like texture, and they sometimes develop a subplocoid arrangement where individual polyp units begin to share walls in an irregular pattern. Paliform lobes, small, finger-like projections that ring the central columella, may also be present, adding fine detail to the skeletal structure. Coloration tends toward muted, uniform tones of pale yellowish-brown or soft greenish-brown, so this isn't a species that will dominate a tank with vivid pigment. What it offers instead is natural reef texture and a satisfying solidity. In the aquarium, Favites halicora falls into intermediate territory. It isn't particularly demanding, but it does benefit from stable water quality and a keeper who understands the basics of reef husbandry. Moderate lighting and moderate flow are the right starting points. Give it enough space from neighbors, since like most Favites it can extend sweeper tentacles at night and make life uncomfortable for nearby corals. A good choice once you have a few reef tanks under your belt.
