Mushroom Coral
Fungia fungites
Also known as: Common Mushroom Coral, disc coral
A free-living disc coral that roams the reef on its own terms.

About
Common mushroom coral (Fungia fungites) is one of those corals that surprises newcomers the first time they see it move. Adults are solitary, free-living polyps that can slowly reposition themselves on the substrate rather than being fixed in place like most reef-building corals. Found across the Indo-Pacific from shallow lagoons to reef slopes down to around 20 meters, this species produces a single large, roughly circular disc that can grow to nearly a foot across. The surface is covered with triangular septal teeth with distinct central ridges running down them, and tall, smooth conical spines along the edges give the skeleton a spiky look when tissue is retracted. Coloration is typically earthy brown, sometimes with a mottled pattern and paler lobes around the tentacle area. Not a flashy coral, but one with a lot of character up close. In the aquarium it does well under moderate lighting and prefers low flow, which suits its habit of sitting on open sandy or rubble areas rather than being wedged into rockwork. It is generally considered accessible for reef keepers who are past the very beginner stage and have stable water quality, and its unusual solitary lifestyle makes it a genuinely interesting addition to a mixed reef display.
