Lesser Star Coral (Goniastrea pectinata) is a solid, dependable coral found across shallow Indo-Pacific reef environments, typically in the upper 15 meters of water where it colonizes a wide range of habitats. Its growth form ranges from encrusting sheets to submassive mounds, and up close the skeletal structure is worth a close look. The corallites form tightly packed patterns that shift between a cerioid arrangement and a faintly meandering one, with thick walls and well-developed paliform lobes giving the surface a sculpted, almost geometric texture. Coloration is usually a muted pale brown or soft pink under typical reef lighting, though colonies in deeper or murkier water often take on a noticeably darker brown tone, a reminder of how much environment shapes the look of any given specimen. In the aquarium this coral sits comfortably in the intermediate care bracket. It does not demand the intense light that some SPS corals require, and moderate flow suits it well, making it a reasonable choice for hobbyists who are moving beyond the basics and want to try their hand at stony corals without diving straight into the most demanding species. It is reef safe and generally undemanding in terms of aggression toward neighbors, though like most LPS-adjacent stony corals it deserves adequate space from other colonies.
