Anemone coral (Goniopora lobata) is one of those corals that stops people mid-stride at the fish store, and for good reason. When its polyps are fully extended, each colony looks less like a coral and more like a dense bouquet, with elongated polyps waving gently in the current. Colonies typically grow as short, thick columns or rounded mounds, and coloration ranges from earthy brown to yellow and green, usually with contrasting tips on the tentacles and oral cones that give the whole structure a two-toned look. In the wild across the Indo-West Pacific, this species is found in relatively shallow reef zones down to about 12 meters, and it notably thrives in turbid, sediment-heavy water where many other corals struggle. Sometimes forming extensive single-species stands. That natural tolerance for murky conditions is interesting context, but don't mistake it for easy care in the aquarium. Goniopora corals as a group have a mixed reputation in the hobby, and this species is no exception. It needs strong lighting and moderate, consistent flow to keep those polyps extended and healthy. Keepers with some coral experience under their belt will have the best results here, as this genus can decline slowly and mysteriously even in otherwise well-run systems.
