Anemone coral (Goniopora pearsoni) is a relatively uncommon species in the hobby, known primarily from shallow reef environments in the Egyptian waters of the Western Indian Ocean. Colonies grow in massive, hemispherical or irregular shapes, and up close the structure is distinctive. Thick-walled corallites each bearing six prominent paliform lobes, with elongate polyps that extend outward in the characteristic Goniopora style that gives the whole genus its anemone-like common name. The coloration is understated but genuinely attractive: a uniform grey body sets off blue oral discs that photograph surprisingly well, sometimes shifting toward pink under certain light conditions and camera settings. Like other members of this genus, it belongs in the hands of someone with reef experience already under their belt. Goniopora corals have a reputation for being tricky to maintain long-term, and this species is no exception to that general caution. It will appreciate high lighting and moderate, steady flow to keep the polyps gently moving without stress. If you have a well-established reef system and some experience keeping more demanding large-polyp stony corals, this species offers a distinctive look that sets it apart from the more commonly kept varieties.
