About

The Green Riffle Goby (Stiphodon elegans) is a tiny but visually rewarding fish native to the clear, fast-moving coastal rainforest streams of Asia and the Pacific. In the wild it hugs rocky substrates in well-oxygenated, swift water, rasping algae from hard surfaces. A feeding habit that carries directly into the aquarium. Males are the showstoppers, displaying vivid green and blue iridescence along their flanks, while females are considerably more subdued in pattern. Despite their small adult size, these gobies have big personalities, and that's where the territorial side comes in: males will squabble with one another and establish pecking orders, so keeping multiple males together calls for enough space and line-of-sight breaks to reduce friction. Toward other species they're genuinely peaceful. Replicating their natural habitat is the real challenge here. This fish demands high water quality, good flow, and a well-established tank with plenty of algae growth on rocks and glass. That's why they're considered an intermediate-level species rather than a beginner's fish. Get the conditions right, though, and you'll have a lively, personable goby that patrols its territory with confidence and rewards close observation.
