Found hugging the rocky shorelines and island margins of Lake Victoria, Pundamilia nyererei is one of just five species in its genus, all of them confined to the southern reaches of that ancient lake. Males develop rich coloration that serves a clear purpose, attracting females and intimidating rivals, and they pursue both goals with real intensity. An unprepared aquarium can turn dangerous fast, as males are fully capable of killing one another without adequate rockwork, line-of-sight breaks, and enough females spread across the group to dilute aggression. A ratio of at least three females per male is a solid starting point. In a well-planned setup it can coexist with other Victorian cichlids or carefully chosen Lake Malawi mbuna, though mixing it with other Pundamilia species is a bad idea given hybridization risks and the genus's still-unsettled taxonomy. On the feeding side it's straightforward. Algae, insects, and quality prepared foods all go down well. Breeding follows the maternal mouthbrooding pattern typical of this lineage: the male courts at a defended spawning site, females collect eggs and hold them for around three weeks, and fry emerge ready to accept small live or prepared foods. Starting with a group of juveniles is often the most practical route to a working colony.
