The Lifalili Cichlid (Hemichromis lifalili) is a small but intense African cichlid from the Congo River basin, where it inhabits forested waterways and gallery forest streams across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of Congo, and Central African Republic. It avoids rapids and swampy areas, preferring calmer, shaded stretches. Outside of breeding season it is reasonably manageable for its genus, compatible with larger Congo tetras, Synodontis catfish, and similar tankmates, but this changes dramatically when a pair comes into spawning condition. The aggression ramps up fast, and any other fish sharing the space is genuinely at risk. Coloration also intensifies at this point, reaching reds that are hard to describe without seeing them in person. Identification is worth getting right, as this species is frequently sold or labelled as Hemichromis bimaculatus. The key difference is spot count: Lifalili Cichlids carry two black spots on the flanks, while bimaculatus has a third on the caudal peduncle. They are best kept as a bonded pair, but pairing adults is unreliable. Buy five or six young fish and let a pair form naturally, then remove the others before things turn dangerous. The parental care they show once eggs are laid is genuinely rewarding to observe. A solid choice for hobbyists ready to move beyond beginner cichlids.
