Spotted Hillstream Loach

Found clinging to fast-moving, oxygen-rich streams in Borneo, Gastromyzon punctulatus is a hillstream loach with a body built for life in the current. The flattened profile, broad paired fins, and a powerful suctorial mouth let it hold position on smooth river rocks where most fish would be swept away instantly. The name punctulatus refers to the spotted patterning across its dorsal surface. A mosaic of pale dots against a darker brown base that provides decent camouflage against the rocky substrate it calls home. In the aquarium, this species is peaceful and generally gets along well with other small, non-aggressive tankmates, though it does best when kept with others of its own kind or with similarly adapted loaches. Replicating its natural environment matters more with this species than with many others. A strong powerhead or wavemaker, smooth river stones, and a well-established film of biofilm and microalgae will keep it active and foraging throughout the day. It also accepts prepared foods and small invertebrates, which helps balance its diet beyond what the glass and rocks provide. This is an intermediate-level fish, not because it is delicate by nature, but because it genuinely needs that high-flow, well-oxygenated setup to do well long-term.
