Ibanorum Betta

Found only in the tannin-stained blackwater streams and peat swamps of southern Sarawak, Malaysia, Betta ibanorum is a wild Betta that belongs to the akarensis species group. Males develop iridescent green to blue scaling on the rear half of the body, a lanceolate caudal fin with extended median rays, and a distinctively yellow eye in life. Details that set it apart from close relatives. It's more mellow than the familiar Betta splendens, though it still holds its own and shouldn't be mixed with boisterous or overly competitive tankmates. Small, peaceful cyprinids or loaches from similar habitats can sometimes work, but many keepers find this fish simply does best on its own or in a dedicated species setup with soft, acidic water and plenty of cover. Like all anabantoids it breathes atmospheric air using a labyrinth organ, and that adaptation ties directly into its breeding requirements. The surface air layer needs to be warm and humid for fry to develop properly. Reproduction itself is fascinating: the female takes the lead in courtship while the male broods the eggs in his mouth for two to three weeks before releasing free-swimming young. B. ibanorum is genuinely uncommon in the hobby, reportedly more often caught for food than the aquarium trade, so finding and keeping it well feels like a worthwhile project for an intermediate keeper who appreciates something off the beaten path.
