Golden Sea Fan (Isis hippuris) is one of the more accessible gorgonian corals available to reef keepers, originating from the broad sweep of the Indo-Pacific where it grows in branching, tree-like colonies on rocky substrates and reef slopes. The colony framework is built from a jointed, horn-like internal skeleton, and living tissue covers those branches in polyps that give the coral a golden to pale yellow-orange appearance. Hence the common name. In the wild it is a sessile animal, anchoring itself to hard surfaces and relying on water movement to deliver food particles to its outstretched polyps. In a reef aquarium it needs a firm attachment point and steady, moderate flow to keep detritus from settling on the branches, which can cause tissue recession. Unlike many gorgonians that depend heavily on zooxanthellae, Isis hippuris benefits from regular target feeding with fine particulate foods, making consistent feeding habits more important than chasing specific lighting intensities. Its care level is considered beginner-friendly by gorgonian standards, which is a welcome change in a group that often demands experienced hands.
