About

The Karnataka Labeo (Labeo calbasu) is a substantial cyprinid native to a wide sweep of South and Southeast Asia, with populations recorded across Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, and into southwestern China. It goes by the name 'black rohu' in parts of India and Bangladesh, and 'orange-fin labeo' in the hobby trade, the latter pointing to the warm-toned fins that help distinguish it from relatives. In the wild it occupies rivers and ponds, generally favouring slower-moving stretches where it grazes on filamentous algae, diatoms, and aquatic vegetation. It is a highly fecund species, females can produce well over 200,000 eggs, and spawning takes place in shallow water during the wet season, though commercial producers rely on hormone-induced breeding rather than natural cues. Labeo calbasu is a significant food and sport fish throughout its native range, and that context matters for anyone considering it. Adults routinely reach well over two feet in length, which puts this species firmly outside what most home aquariums can reasonably accommodate. It belongs to the genus Labeo, a diverse and taxonomically complex group of more than 100 species spread across Africa and Asia whose relationships are still being untangled by researchers. Honest advice: admire this one in public aquariums or on the end of a fishing line.
