The Chinese Longsnout Catfish (Leiocassis longirostris) is immediately recognizable by the elongated snout that gives it its name. Native to the major river systems of China and Korea, this is a fish that commands respect both in the wild and in captivity. Adults can reach impressive lengths, and any keeper considering one needs to be honest about their setup from the start, because this species simply cannot thrive in a typical home aquarium. In the wild it occupies large, flowing freshwater systems, and it needs the space and water quality to match. Behaviorally, it tends toward the nocturnal end of the spectrum, becoming more active after lights out and spending daylight hours in quieter areas of the tank. It's an omnivore with a broad appetite, which makes feeding relatively straightforward, but its size and long lifespan mean a commitment measured in decades rather than years.
