Found in Brazilian river systems of South America, Peckoltia compta is a small to mid-sized member of the armored catfish family that rarely exceeds a few inches in length. Like others in the Peckoltia genus, it possesses the ability to breathe air facultatively, meaning it can supplement gill respiration by gulping atmospheric air when oxygen levels in the water drop. A handy adaptation for life in environments where conditions can vary considerably. In the aquarium this trait offers a degree of resilience, though it should never be used as an excuse to neglect water quality. This is a bottom-dwelling fish that appreciates a tank with plenty of driftwood, caves, and shaded resting spots, as it tends to be secretive during daylight hours and more active once the lights dim. It is generally peaceful with tankmates, making it a reasonable candidate for a community setup with similarly sized fish that share compatible water conditions. Feeding is straightforward for an omnivore. It will accept sinking wafers, fresh vegetables, and occasional protein-rich foods without much fuss. Intermediate care level is a fair assessment, mostly because this fish benefits from stable, well-filtered water and an aquascape that meets its need for cover and territory.
