Found along the tropical reefs of Australia, Litophyton swainensis is a sessile octocoral belonging to the family Nephtheidae. A group commonly referred to as tree or bush corals for the branching silhouettes many members develop. This species was formally described as part of a sweeping 2020 revision of the Litophyton genus across Australian waters, meaning hobbyist records and in-tank observations are still relatively limited compared to more established soft coral genera. What we do know places it in intermediate territory for reef keeping: it tolerates a range of lighting conditions at moderate intensities and appreciates robust, consistent water movement, which is typical for nephtheid corals that rely on flow to bring suspended particles within reach of their polyps. Like its relatives, it is non-aggressive and considered reef safe, making it a reasonable candidate for mixed soft coral displays provided flow and nutrient levels are dialed in. Because documentation on this particular species in captivity is still thin, it is best approached by keepers who already have experience managing Nephtheidae and understand the sometimes finicky feeding and acclimation demands this family can present. Patience and careful observation will go a long way with a coral this poorly documented in the hobby.
