Leather Coral

Found across the reefs of the Western North Pacific, Lobophytum caputospiculatum is a soft coral belonging to the leather coral group. A family known for its tolerance and adaptability in reef aquariums. Like other lobophytums, it has a characteristic lobed, finger-like structure covered in tiny polyps that extend during feeding and retract when disturbed or during periodic shedding cycles. That shedding behavior is completely normal: the coral periodically coats itself in a waxy layer which it then sloughs off, sometimes looking closed and unhappy for a few days before bouncing back and opening up fully again. New keepers occasionally panic during these phases, but patience is all that is needed. This species falls comfortably into beginner territory, partly because it handles a range of conditions without drama and does not rely on intense light the way many stony corals do. It is also reef safe, posing no meaningful threat to neighbors as long as it has a little space to expand without pressing against other corals. Moderate flow helps keep detritus from settling on the tissue, which can cause localized irritation. It is a solid, low-maintenance addition to a mixed reef that wants some soft coral texture and movement.
