Found on tropical reefs off New Caledonia in the Western Central Pacific, Lobophytum cristatum is a sessile soft coral belonging to the leather coral group. Like others in the Lobophytum genus, it likely forms lobed, leathery colonies that remain anchored in place throughout its life, extending polyps to feed when conditions suit it. New Caledonia hosts a rich and somewhat distinct marine fauna, and this species is documented as part of that regional soft coral community. Because source data on this particular species is limited compared to more commonly traded Lobophytum, much of what applies here is extrapolated from close relatives. And that's actually good news for hobbyists, since the genus as a whole has a solid reputation for tolerating the kind of imperfect conditions that come with everyday reef keeping. It is considered reef safe, posing no threat to stony corals or other invertebrates when given reasonable space.
