Found on tropical reefs off New Caledonia in the Western Central Pacific, Lobophytum proprium is a sessile soft coral belonging to the leather coral group. Like other lobophytums, it spends its entire adult life anchored to the substrate, drawing nutrients from the water column and relying on its symbiotic zooxanthellae for much of its energy. The genus is broadly recognized for producing fleshy, lobed colonies that can take on a range of shapes depending on age, flow conditions, and placement in the tank. Care requirements for this species are refreshingly straightforward, making it a reasonable choice for reef keepers who are still building their experience with soft corals. It does well under moderate lighting and appreciates a steady but not aggressive flow that keeps its surface clean without stressing the tissue. One thing worth knowing about leather corals generally is that they periodically shed a waxy outer layer as a normal part of their biology. During this time the polyps retract and the coral can look unwell, but this is nothing to worry about. As with all lobophytums, it also releases chemical compounds into the water that can irritate neighboring corals, so thoughtful placement and good skimming or activated carbon use are worthwhile habits.
