The lowland cichlid (Herichthys carpintis) goes by a few names in the hobby, Pearlscale Cichlid and Green Texas Cichlid among them, though neither fully captures what this fish is about. Despite the Texas Cichlid label sometimes attached to it in stores, that name properly belongs to the related but distinct Herichthys cyanoguttatus, so double-check before buying. Native to the Atlantic-draining river systems of northeastern Mexico, including the Panuco and Soto La Marina drainages, this species is equally at home in fast-moving currents and calm backwaters. Its flanks carry a bluish-green iridescence with reflective flecks scattered across the scales. Subtle enough to reward a second look but not the main event. The main event is the personality. Like many large North American cichlids, this one is territorial and will treat smaller tankmates as a meal rather than company. During breeding, the intensity ramps up further. Pairs perform a courtship display before dramatically shifting to a black-and-white coloration, then spawn on smooth flat surfaces. Both parents guard eggs and fry attentively, though the male can turn on the female post-spawn, so a divider is worth keeping on hand. With solid filtration and thoughtful tankmate selection, this is a rewarding species for anyone looking to step into keeping bigger New World cichlids.
