Crispy Crust Coral

Crispy crust coral (Merulina ampliata) is one of those species that genuinely rewards a second look. Found across a wide range of Indo-Pacific reef environments, it shows up most commonly in lagoons but tolerates quite a variety of conditions from the surface down to around 40 meters. What makes this coral visually interesting is how variable its growth form can be. A single large colony can produce both flat, plate-like sheets and branching, arborescent sections at the same time, sometimes side by side. The flat plating sections often show concentric growth rings, while the branches carry valleys that twist and contort in ways that look almost sculptural. Those valleys are short and straight on flat surfaces, radiating outward from the colony center before fanning and dividing. Color-wise, expect pale tones. Soft blues and washed-out browns are typical, and the blue can photograph as pink depending on your lighting. Like most stony corals, it extends its tentacles primarily at night. In the aquarium, Merulina ampliata is considered an intermediate-level coral, doing well under moderate light and flow. It is reef safe and a reasonable choice for a keeper who has moved past the basics and wants some architectural variety in their display.
