The columniform crust coral (Merulina cylindrica) is a hermatypic, reef-building species native to the Indo-West Pacific, where it grows across a wide depth range from shallow reef flats down to around 40 meters. Unlike the more familiar plating or branching corals, this species develops an upright, columnar growth form that sets it apart visually from most other Merulina relatives and gives it a distinctive presence in the aquarium. Its natural range stretches from the eastern Indian Ocean across to the central Pacific, and it has been documented in Philippine reef systems among many others. In the aquarium, it is generally considered an intermediate-level coral. Not the most demanding species on the reef, but not an ideal pick for someone just starting out with stony corals either. It does well under moderate lighting and appreciates moderate water movement, which mimics the kind of flow it experiences on natural reef slopes. Because it is reef safe, it can be kept alongside other corals without concern about aggressive chemical or physical interactions, provided overall water quality is kept stable. If you can maintain consistent parameters and give it a good spot with reasonable light and flow, this is a rewarding coral with a growth form you do not see in every tank.
