The false knob coral (Micromussa multipunctata) is a large-polyp stony coral found across a broad sweep of the Western Pacific, from Japan down through Indonesia and out to Fiji and New Caledonia. In the wild it occupies reef environments from the surface down to around 30 meters, which hints at its adaptability to varying light conditions. Each colony is made up of fleshy, rounded polyps that tend to display rich, contrasting colors. Often combinations of reds, greens, and purples with patterned centers that make the colony look almost painted. It shares a close resemblance to other Micromussa and Acanthastrea relatives, so identification can trip up newer keepers, but in the tank it's pretty forgiving regardless of the label. This is genuinely one of the more accessible LPS corals for someone building out their first reef. It does best with moderate lighting rather than intense output, and it prefers gentler flow that lets its polyps expand fully without getting battered. Feeding is appreciated. It will readily accept small meaty foods when polyps are extended in the evening. Growth is slow and steady, and colonies tend to stay compact, making it a practical choice for smaller reef displays. Aggressive sweeper tentacles are possible, so give it a bit of breathing room from neighbors.
