Pore coral (Montipora edwardsi) is one of the encrusting and plating Montipora forms found across Indo-West Pacific reef systems, where it grows in association with shallow tropical reef communities. Like most members of this genus, it develops sheets or plates of calcium carbonate covered in the fine pore-like texture that gives the group their common name, and coloration can shift depending on the zooxanthellae present and the intensity of available light. In the aquarium this is a species firmly in the advanced category, not because Montipora are inherently fragile as a group, but because this particular coral demands conditions that stay consistently high-end. It needs intense illumination and robust, steady flow to keep its tissue healthy and its surface free of sediment and competing algae. Even brief lapses in water quality or lighting consistency can cause tissue recession that is difficult to reverse. For experienced reef keepers who already have a mature, stable system dialed in, it can be a rewarding addition, building out an interesting architectural layer across the rockwork. Beginners would be better served starting with more forgiving Montipora species before attempting this one.
