Pore Coral

Pore coral (Montipora verruculosa) is one of the many encrusting and plating members of a notoriously large genus, and telling Montipora species apart is genuinely difficult even for experienced reef keepers. Found across the Indo-West Pacific, from roughly the eastern Indian Ocean out through Melanesia, this coral grows on shallow reef structures down to about 20 meters. Its surface is covered in the fine, raised verrucae, tiny wart-like projections, that give the species its name and provide useful identification clues when combined with growth form. In the aquarium it can develop as an encrusting sheet or take on a more plating habit depending on light and current, slowly spreading across rockwork or overhanging edges in ways that make it a genuinely interesting piece of aquascape. That said, this is not a beginner's coral. It asks for intense, consistent lighting and robust water movement, and it sits in a genus that is widely considered unforgiving when water quality slips. Montipora as a group are among the first to show tissue recession when nutrients drift out of range. If your system is dialed in and stable, verruculosa can be a rewarding long-term project, but it deserves respect rather than an impulse purchase.
