Moonlight Gourami

Found in the sluggish waterways, floodplains, and heavily vegetated swamps of the Mekong and Chao Phraya river systems, the moonlight gourami (Trichogaster microlepis) is one of the more understated members of its family. The body is a soft, pearlescent silver with an almost metallic sheen, and the threadlike ventral fins, characteristic of the gourami group, extend well below the belly, often tipped in orange or red on adult males. Like all labyrinth fish, this species breathes atmospheric air directly and must always have access to the water's surface. In the wild it thrives in calm, densely planted conditions, and a well-planted aquarium with minimal current suits it perfectly. Temperament-wise it's generally an easy neighbor, but males can become pushy toward other gouramis or similarly shaped fish, so it's worth being thoughtful about tankmates. It also tends to become withdrawn when kept with boisterous or fast-moving species, so pairing it with calm, similarly-sized companions brings out the best behavior. Given its size potential and that touch of territorial instinct, it sits comfortably in the intermediate care category. Not difficult, but rewarding for a keeper who puts some thought into the setup and community.
