The Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus niloticus) is arguably one of the most ecologically and economically significant freshwater fish on the planet, farmed as a food source across dozens of countries and notoriously capable of establishing itself in almost any aquatic environment it enters. Its natural range spans a huge swath of Africa and extends into parts of the Middle East, covering river systems from the Nile basin through West Africa. That adaptability is both its defining trait and its biggest warning label for hobbyists. In the home aquarium, this species is a tough sell. Adults grow large and are genuinely messy, requiring a very substantial tank even for a small group. While they tend to be reasonably tolerant of tankmates outside of breeding season, spawning triggers serious territorial aggression, and small fish will simply be treated as food. Companions need to be large and robust. Think big African or Central American cichlids, larger catfish, or Synodontis species. Breeding itself is not difficult; the female is a maternal mouthbrooder who carries and guards the fry for several weeks, and the species reproduces readily under a wide range of conditions. The resulting broods are large and the fry grow fast, which can quickly become a problem. Honest advice: despite being beginner-friendly in terms of pure hardiness, the Nile tilapia is better suited to a dedicated species setup or a pond than a typical community aquarium.
