Found among thick leaf litter in the forest streams of Sumatra and Borneo, Pangio piperata is a slender little eel loach that belongs to the shelfordii group within the wide-ranging genus Pangio. Its body is a yellowish-brown base scattered with small dark spots that loosely align into a lateral stripe, and some individuals show darker saddle markings across the back. A black spot sits at the base of the caudal fin, and males can be told apart from females by their noticeably longer pectoral fins. Because it closely resembles certain populations of the highly variable P. shelfordii, and the two species often share the same habitat, P. piperata frequently slips into the hobby unidentified, tucked into shipments of similar-looking congeners. Despite the aggressive and territorial labels that sometimes get attached to Pangio species, these loaches are genuinely peaceful with tankmates and with each other. They do pack themselves into tight resting spots communally, so keeping a group of at least five or six gives them the social dynamic they clearly prefer. Small, gentle companions from similar soft-water environments work well. Like all cobitids, they carry sharp sub-ocular spines that can snag nets or, in stressed fish, cause minor injuries, so a soft net or container is worth using when moving them. Breeding in captivity has not been documented.
