The African snakehead (Parachanna africana) is a seldom-seen predator from the coastal river systems of West Africa, native to drainages running from southern Benin through Nigeria, including the lower Ouémé and Cross Rivers. It belongs to the family Channidae, a group whose name comes from the large, snake-like scales covering the head. An immediately recognizable trait once you've seen it. The body is adorned with 8 to 11 dark, chevron-shaped markings along the flanks behind the gill cover, though these can fade or disappear entirely depending on the fish's mood, making identification tricky at times. Like all channids, this species is an obligate air-breather, relying on paired suprabranchial chambers to extract oxygen directly from the atmosphere. You'll regularly see it surfacing for gulps of air, so a tight-fitting lid is absolutely non-negotiable. It's genuinely uncommon in the hobby and tends to turn up as accidental bycatch in shipments of other species, so finding one takes patience. A species-only setup is the safest approach, though it can sometimes coexist with similarly sized tankmates given enough space. Breeding has not been documented in captivity, though wild fish spawn among floating plants during the wet season, with males guarding the surface-laid eggs. A rewarding species for intermediate keepers with a taste for something genuinely unusual.
