Congo Snakehead

The Congo snakehead (Parachanna insignis) is a substantial, predatory fish native to several major river systems in Central and West Africa, including the Congo basin, the Ogooué drainage in Gabon, and the Kouilou River in the Republic of Congo. It belongs to the African branch of the snakehead family, which is distinct from the more commonly kept Asian species, and it shares the group's characteristic long, cylindrical body and broad, flattened head. Like all snakeheads, it is an obligate air-breather, meaning it must have access to the surface to gulp atmospheric oxygen. A tank with a tight-fitting lid is not optional. In the wild, these fish are apex predators that feed on whatever they can catch, and that hunting instinct carries over completely into captivity. Tank mates are generally not a realistic option unless you are housing same-species pairs in a very large setup. Adults can reach nearly 21 inches, so the space commitment is real. That said, keepers who go in with realistic expectations often find them rewarding. They are intelligent, aware of their surroundings, and can become quite responsive to their owners. An intermediate care rating reflects the setup demands rather than any particular sensitivity to water conditions.
