African Snakehead

The African snakehead (Parachanna obscura) is one of a small number of snakehead species found naturally outside Asia, all of them belonging to the genus Parachanna and all native to Africa. This one ranges widely across West and Central Africa, from the Senegal River basin through the Volta and Niger systems, the Lake Chad drainage, and as far as the Nile. Typically lurking among marginal vegetation and flooded grasslands where it hunts insects and smaller fish. It's a robust, elongated fish capable of breathing atmospheric air directly, which means it can tolerate oxygen-poor water that would stress most other species. In the aquarium, however, its needs are demanding in a different way: it grows large and it is an unrepentant predator. Tankmates smaller than about two-thirds its own body length are simply prey, and even similarly sized robust fish like polypterus or large catfish are kept at the keeper's own risk. Most experienced owners recommend keeping this species alone. Breeding has been documented in captivity, with pairs engaging in an embrace-style spawning reminiscent of anabantoids, scattering eggs among surface vegetation, and both parents guarding the spawn. But it remains a rare achievement. This is an intermediate-to-advanced fish best suited to keepers who appreciate large, intelligent predators and can commit the space and attention they require.
