Bubblegum coral (Paragorgia arborea) is one of the largest and most recognizable cold-water gorgonians on the planet, forming tree-like colonies that can grow several meters tall in the wild. The common nickname comes from the soft, inflated appearance of its polyps, which cluster along branching arms in shades of pink, red, orange, or white, depending on the population. In the wild it lives in deep, cold, dimly lit waters across the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and beyond, often anchoring to hard substrate on seamounts and continental slopes where it can persist for decades or even centuries. As an aquarium subject it is far less commonly encountered than tropical gorgonians, but its care requirements are generally considered manageable for a motivated keeper. It prefers moderate, indirect flow and low to moderate light, which mirrors the dim conditions of its natural deep-water habitat. Like most non-photosynthetic gorgonians, it relies on regular feeding with appropriately sized particulate foods to thrive rather than on light-driven zooxanthellae. Getting the feeding regimen right is the main challenge, so while it may be categorized as beginner-friendly in terms of sensitivity, it rewards hobbyists who already have some experience meeting the nutritional demands of filter-feeding invertebrates.
