The flat lettuce coral (Pectinia maxima) is one of the more architecturally dramatic large-polyp stony corals you're likely to encounter. In the wild, colonies can grow well beyond a metre across, building tall vertical blades that rise up to 60 centimetres from a flatter basal structure. Some colonies lean entirely toward one growth form or the other, though most combine both. The surface texture is distinctive: corallites sit flush and widely spaced, with prominent septo-costae running in neat parallel lines from the base out to the frond edges. Coloration is consistent across the species, a yellowish-cream tone with darker bases and lighter outer margins. Not flashy, but the sculptural form more than makes up for the understated palette. In the wild this coral favors shallow, sheltered reef zones where turbidity keeps light intensity moderate and wave energy low, which gives you a clear clue about how to keep it happy in a tank. It appreciates moderate rather than intense light and gentle, consistent flow rather than anything turbulent. Given its potential size in nature, it's best suited to a larger display where it has room to express its growth habit. Intermediate-level reefers who understand stable water chemistry and appropriate flow management should find it a rewarding long-term project.
