Found in the waters of the Western South Pacific, Perissogorgia vitrea is a gorgonian sea fan that has earned a place in reef aquariums thanks to its manageable care requirements. Unlike many gorgonians that demand pristine, highly specific conditions, this species sits comfortably in the beginner-friendly category, making it a reasonable choice for reefers who are just starting to explore soft coral and gorgonian keeping. Its branching, fan-like growth form creates a sense of natural structure and movement in the tank, particularly when positioned in moderate flow, which causes the branches to sway gently and the polyps to extend for feeding. Moderate lighting suits it well, so it does not need to be crammed under the most intense fixtures in the tank. As with all gorgonians, good water quality and consistent flow are more important than chasing extreme parameters, and allowing polyps to feed on fine particulate matter or phytoplankton will help the colony thrive over time. It is fully reef safe, posing no threat to other corals or invertebrates. Data on this species in the aquarium hobby is still somewhat limited, but its basic requirements align with other beginner-friendly gorgonians, so established care practices for that group translate well here.
